OAK FLOORING SPECIFICATION
Milled and machined to a very high standard this is not to be
compared with some products that are coming in from eastern Asia and
China. This is manufactured to a very high standard and kiln dried 7.5%
- 10.0% moisture content - this is furniture quality oak
It is Tongue and Grooved (T & G) on all 4 edges for a perfect
fit and ease of installation - end matched included in the price. We do
not charge £5/m2 extra for putting T & G on the short ends
Our solid oak flooring comes in a choice of Micro-Bevelled on all 4
edges and square edged and has a smooth surface that does not need
heavy sanding after
installation. The underside has stress grooves to ensure stability
after installation
OAK FLOOR BOARD DIMENSIONS
We offer several widths – 90, 130, 150 and 200mm all 19/20mm thick.
This means all our flooring is over ¾” thick so it is structural – it
can be laid directly over joists. We offer a variety of length packages to give
you maximum choice and flexibility. The shorter lengths
allow for finishing to the edges and mean wastage is minimal. Allow
only 5% extra when measuring and ordering. For example if you
measure your room to 19m2, order 20m2
QUALITY OF SOLID WOOD FLOORING
In every parcel of oak flooring there is a mix of 'prime quality'
(no knots) and a proportion of 'first sort' (some tight knots with
filler, no break-out, some stronger colour in the grain) and ‘second
sort’ oak with larger knots and stronger colours in the grain
FINISH OF SOLID WOOD FLOORING
The Oak floorboards are sanded to 120 grit, this is a lovely
surface. After laying it should just need a light sanding to clean it
and finish off any filler before applying your first coat of your
chosen finish. You do not have to rent an industrial sander and make a
huge mess. You can stain, varnish, oil or wax this beautiful hardwood
flooring to give it your own unique appearance. See our finishes page or contact us for details.
We do not normally pre-finish this oak as there are so many
alternatives you can choose from. Please look at the photos to give you
some idea of just how great this product looks.
Do not confuse this with the many pre-lacquered solid or engineered
oak floors that are available. Ours has nothing to hide. Many of them
will be called 'Character Oak' or 'Rusic Oak' which means they will
have shakes (splits) and knots which are falling out.
WOOD FLOORING INSTALLATION SERVICE
We offer a solid oak flooring installation service within a distance of
approximately 25 miles from Hertford to cover Hertfordshire,
Cambridgeshire, Bucks, Berks , Essex and London.
BASIC COST
The basic cost of installing a solid wood or engineered
wood floor and labour for finishing on site is about £30 per square
metre onto a timber subfloor. If there is a concrete subfloor, we use
Rewmar MS Polymer wood flooring adhesive, which we consider to be
the best on
the market. A 16kg tub costs about £87 and will have an
approximate
coverage of 16 M2.
FINISHING MATERIALS
In addition, you will need oil or lacquer/varnish to finish the
solid oak floor on site. You may also need some finishing trims, if you
are retaining your skirting boards and thresholds at doorways and where
your new wood floor meets eg carpet

SUB FLOOR PREPARATION
Where a concrete screed has been laid in a new extension
or new build, sufficient time must be allowed for the screed to dry out
and the normal guide is to allow one day for every 1mm of thickness.
(One inch per month) Then, prior to installation of the timber floor, a
liquid damp proof membrane should be applied. On old concrete floors,
which may not be perfectly level, a latex self-levelling compound
should be put down.
Our floors are mainly 20mm thick, which is a structural thickness, so
they can be laid straight onto joists.
ACCESSORIES
We also offer a range of oak skirting boards, architraves and door liners, which are a perfect complement to your new floor.
FINISHING
Remember, there is a difference between European Oak and
Mongolian Oak or American White Oak. This difference becomes apparent
when the floor is varnished or oiled. The grain of European Oak is much
more distinctive and will give a much richer finish.
Our flooring has been pre-sanded in the factory, so only a light
sanding is required on site. It has also been filled where necessary
e.g. around a knot. Having vacuumed the floor to remove any grit, we
recommend a light coating of oil or lacquer, which should then be
buffed to ensure there is no pooling of the liquid. After the
recommended period, a second coat should be applied in the same way.

Our latest products are oils combined with a hardener to give the hardest wearing finish on the market.
